Description
Coppermine Falls Side Waterfall is a small cascade located right next to the more prominent Coppermine Falls in the Delaware Water Gap. The waterfall sits just below a minor split in Coppermine Brook. While the majority of the brook’s volume flows toward the main falls, a smaller portion cascades over this side before the two branches rejoin downstream.
Despite their shared waterway and side-by-side positioning, the waterfalls are separated by 150 feet along a prominent diversion.
The waterfall itself is very scenic and features two tiers, the top of which is significantly bigger. During times of high water, water also flows over a small overhang to the right, creating one of the few places in New Jersey where you can stand behind a waterfall. Even when water flows over the overhang, it is typically just a trickle
Waterfall Directions
- From the parking area on Old Mine Road, take the red-blazed Coppermine Trail for approximately 0.7 miles. Note: An unmarked trail branches to the left near the very beginning of the hike. This path leads to several larger cascades, most notably Lower Coppermine Falls.
- At the 0.7-mile mark, the Coppermine Trail bends to the left (at 41.030306, -75.023209). Instead of turning, continue straight onto the obvious, unmarked trail ahead.
- Follow this unmarked path directly to the main Coppermine Falls. To find the side waterfall, cross Coppermine Brook and bushwhack a short distance downstream until you reach the side waterfall.
Parking Information
Unfortunately, the parking area for Coppermine Brook is very small. While there used to be a large parking area at the bottom of the Coppermine Trail, it has since been blocked. Now, there are about 4-5 spaces on the shoulder of Old Mine Road at the trailhead. Alternatively, there is another small parking area about 0.25 miles down the road at the Poxono Boat Launch, which can also fill up during boating season.
