Lower Coppermine Falls

Lower Coppermine Falls in the Delaware Water Gap

Description

Lower Coppermine Falls is a waterfall located on Coppermine Brook in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The waterfall and brook are named after the historic copper mines along the brook. In fact, the waterfall is located just upstream from one of these mine entrances.

Lower Coppermine Falls is a very scenic waterfall located in a deep ravine. The waterfall features two main tiers before dropping into a large pool. Just below the pool are a series of additional, but much smaller cascades. The waterfall is located off-trail and requires a short but moderately challenging bushwhack to reach.

Directions

  1. From the trailhead on Old Mine Road, follow the Red Coppermine Trail.
  2. After about a hundred feet, the trail forks with the red blazes pointing right. Turn left onto the obvious but unmarked trail.
  3. Follow this unmarked trail about a quarter mile before it ends at the (gated) entrance to the old mine. Here, you can view a smaller cascade, but to see the main waterfall, you will need to bushwhack upstream a little. Fortunately, this is not too challenging or overgrown.

Parking Information

Unfortunately, the parking area for Coppermine Brook is very small. While there used to be a large parking area at the bottom of the Coppermine Trail, it has since been blocked. Now, there are about 4-5 spaces on the shoulder of Old Mine Road at the trailhead. Alternatively, there is another small parking area about 0.25 miles down the road at the Poxono Boat Launch, which can also fill up during boating season.
