Unnamed Waterfall at Abram S. Hewitt State Forest 4

A waterfall at Abram S. Hewitt State Forest

Unnamed Waterfall at Abram S. Hewitt State Forest 3 is a moderately large off-trail waterfall in West Milford. Despite being relatively unknown, it is a very scenic and surprisingly big cascade.

Reaching this waterfall is relatively challenging but quick. The easiest access is to park in the pull-off on Warwick Turnpike. There are multiple pull-offs on this road; try to park at the one at 41.157528, -74.367500. If you park in one of the other pull-offs, you will need to walk up or down the busy road. From the pull-off, find the Green and Blue Bearfort Connector Trail. Begin on this trail and cross Green Brook via a bridge. To the left is another unnamed waterfall. Take this trail for about 0.2 miles. At one point, just before the trail ends at the Green Bearfort Ridge Trail, there will be an unmarked path to the left. This trail is not obvious. The location is 41.15853, -74.36946. If you reach the Green Trail, you have gone too far.

Follow this unmarked path down, doing your best to follow what faint trail. At one point, the trail appears to have disappeared into thick rhododendron. Here, you will see a large fallen tree, which you will use to pass. Balance on this surprisingly long tree until you reach the other end. At the end, you should be able to see Green Brook. From there, you have two options: walk through the water or cross via another tree. From this second tree, you should be able to see the waterfall in the distance (plus a much smaller one closer). From here, work your way upstream until you reach the waterfall. It is possible to reach the cascade while staying dry, but it is challenging. This is a fairly complicated route. If you need more help, download the KML file of the GPS track from my most recent visit.

The waterfall itself is very impressive, featuring a main vertical drop before hitting a series of rocks and cascading the rest of the way down. Despite what feels like a jungle adventure to get to, the waterfall is just next to Warwick Turnpike, and you can hear cars the entire time you are there, slightly dampening the experience. There may be more waterfalls upstream, but the waterfall is surrounded by thick rhododendron and vertical rocks, so I have not attempted to go further.
