Unnamed Waterfall at Abram S. Hewitt State Forest 1 is a moderately large off-trail waterfall at Abram S. Hewitt State Forest in West Milford. This waterfall is located in a section of Green Brook that splits before rejoining a few hundred feet downstream. This creates the appearance of two (and arguably three) waterfalls side by side. It is located just off Warwick Turnpike, and you can catch a glimpse of it if driving west (uphill). Despite this, the view from the road is not good enough to justify visiting it without hiking closer.
Reaching this waterfall is extremely difficult, despite its partial visibility from the road and its proximity to hiking trails. This is because there is no official trail to reach it, and the forest surrounding it is thick with rhododendron. My recommendation is to park at the pull-off at 41.155806, -74.362806 on Warwick Turnpike. You will likely be able to hear and see glimpses of the waterfall from here. There is a trailhead at this pull-off, but I do not recommend it because it takes you uphill and away from the waterfall. Instead, hop over the guardrail and work your way upstream. Because the rhododendron lining Green Brook makes it difficult to pass through the streambanks, I would just walk through the water.
Once you do make it to the waterfall, the more aggressive side (the left) is unfortunately much harder to see due to high rhododendron and other forest growth. The gentler cascade to the right is easy thanks to a wide pool.
I have been to other waterfalls along Green Brook in late summer and early fall, and unfortunately, they tend to dry to a trickle. This is really unfortunate, because as I mentioned above, you will likely have to walk through Green Brook itself, which is very cold when the waterfall is flowing at its best in the spring (trust me, I know from experience).
