Wyanokie Falls

Wyanokie Falls at Norvin Green State Forest

Wyanokie Falls is a small waterfall located in Norvin Green State Forest in Bloomingdale. The easiest way to reach the falls is to park on Snake Den Road. From there, take the Purple Trail. At the top of a moderately difficult, rocky uphill climb, you will see a sign pointing left for the Mine Trail. Follow this trail, which remains blazed in purple, until you reach the Orange and Purple Trail to the left. Follow this a short distance until you reach Wyanokie Falls.

The trail passes directly above the falls. While it is possible to see the waterfall from here, the best view is from the bottom. Unfortunately, the trail does not reach the base, and the descent is a challenging scramble. The best view is arguably from the left side (when looking up from the bottom), but it is also much more difficult to reach. This view is superior because a large boulder blocks most of the sightline from the right side. This boulder also diverts the water toward the left, creating an illusion at some points that the water is simply disappearing.

While Blue Mine Brook is a somewhat substantial stream, this is still a seasonal waterfall. This is because the brook is diverted in the summer to fill the Highlands Natural Pool. When the pool is full, the water is diverted back away from the pool, but during drier periods, this diversion can result in Wyanokie Falls becoming just a trickle or drying up completely.
