Unnamed Waterfall on the Lamington River

Unnamed Waterfall on Lamington River is a small waterfall located near the unincorporated community of Pottersville. Unfortunately, the waterfall sits on private property, making it challenging to reach despite being just off Black River Road.

It is possible to see the waterfall from public land on the eastern side of the river by bushwhacking in from the hunting parking area of Hacklebarney State Park. To do so, park at “Sportsman Lot 4” on Hacklebarney Road. The parking lot is not on any GPS, but its coordinates are 40.720556, -74.720917. From there, walk back to Hacklebarney Road and turn right. A couple of hundred feet down the road, you will see an old gate with a woods road behind it. Take the woods road until you begin to hear the waterfall below. The road does not lead down to the waterfall, and you will need to make your own path down to the river. The terrain gets progressively steeper as it approaches the water. This waterfall is slightly upstream from Potters Falls and it is recommended to visit them together.

The unnamed waterfall features a few tiers and goes around a bend in the river. Because of this bend and the surrounding topography, it is surprisingly difficult to view the waterfall from below. It is recommended to view the waterfall from the rocks at the bend. According to the New Jersey Geological and Water Survey, this waterfall is only 6 feet high, but I’d argue it is twice that.

Directly across the river is a private home with many posted trespassing signs. Unfortunately, it seems likely that the homeowners have the best view of the waterfall.
