Unnamed Waterfall at Abram S. Hewitt State Forest 2 is a moderately large off-trail waterfall in West Milford. Despite being relatively unknown, it is a very scenic and surprisingly big cascade.
The waterfall features two side-by-side drops: the main cascade to the right, and a smaller one that snakes around the left. Both of these drop into a large pool. The end of the pool features numerous rocks that cross the brook, offering different views.
Reaching this waterfall is relatively challenging but quick. The easiest access is to park in the pull-off on Warwick Turnpike. There are multiple pull-offs on this road; try to park at the one at 41.157528, -74.367500. If you park in one of the other pull-offs, you will need to walk up or down the busy road. From the pull-off, find the Green and Blue Bearfort Connector Trail. From here you have two options:
- Hike down to Green Brook until you reach a bridge, with another waterfall to the left. Before crossing the bridge, turn right and follow Green Brook downstream, crossing over many fallen trees. Work your way down to the bottom of the waterfall using the fallen trees to help.
- Immediately to the right of the beginning of the Green and Blue Trail, locate what appears to be an eroded path created by runoff. Take this fairly steep and slippery trail down to the base of the waterfall.
Neither of these options is easy, but the waterfall is impressive. At the bottom, there appears to be another trail coming from downstream. I followed this briefly, but it did not seem to go anywhere. I will try again in the future and see if there is easier access from the bottom.
