Cascades near Hemlock Falls at South Mountain Reservation in Milburn New Jersey

Description

Upstream from the popular Hemlock Falls is a series of small but interesting cascades. The main cascade is about 10 feet tall and plunges into a small pool. Below the cascades, the stream heads into a rocky gorge before tumbling over Hemlock Falls.

Directions

You can reach the cascades in two main ways: from above Hemlock Falls or from below. The directions for both routes are described below. We recommend coming from below Hemlock Falls to access that waterfall and Hobble Falls.

From Below Hemlock Falls (0.3 miles one way)
  1. Park at the Hemlock Falls parking area on South Orange Avenue and take the obvious trail.
  2. Almost immediately the Yellow Trail merges from the right. Continue straight, now on the Yellow Trail.
  3. At the obvious directory turn left.
  4. Continue straight until you reach Hobble Falls, then Hemlock Falls.
  5. To the left side of Hemlock Falls, take the set of stone steps up above the falls.
  6. Continue on this trail until you reach the cascades.
From Above Hemlock Falls (0.65 miles one way)
  1. Park at the Summit Field parking area. This is a one-way loop, park in the lot after the dog park.
  2. Take the Red Summit Trail and turn right.
  3. Follow this trail until you reach a small map.
  4. Turn left onto the unmarked, but obvious trail at this map.
  5. Head downhill until you see the Red and White Hemlock Loop Trail on the right.
  6. Turn right and follow this trail to the falls.
