Description
Lower Unnamed Waterfall at Apshawa Preserve is a seldom-visited waterfall located in West Milford. Despite this, the waterfall is relatively easy to reach, though it does require about a five-mile round-trip hike.
This unnamed waterfall is very scenic, and it is surprising that the park does not have an official trail to it. It cascades down a series of rocks into a large pool surrounded by large boulders. The terrain down to the water itself is fairly steep, but it is possible to reach the bottom. For those not wanting to climb down the steep slope, the waterfall is fully visible from the trail.
Directions
- Park at the moderately sized Apshawa Preserve parking area on Northwood Drive.
- Take the Blue Trail, which is located through a deer gate for 1.5 miles until you reach the Orange Trail.
- Take the Orange Trail until it ends at the Green Trail.
- Turn left onto the Green Trail. Along the way you will pass a dam where you can see the upper unnamed waterfall.
- Continue on the Green Trail, passing some ruins and the main Apshawa Falls. Just below Apshawa Falls, the Green Trail makes a hard right turn just before a gate, beginning a long uphill section. Do not make this turn; instead, continue straight towards the gate.
- Go through the gate and follow the remains of an old woods road downhill a short distance. You will soon see the waterfall on the right.
