Buttermilk Falls is a small seasonal waterfall in High Mountain Park Preserve in Wayne Township. The waterfall is located in a region of the park known as Franklin Clove (which is worth visiting in its own right, even more so than the waterfall). The easiest way to reach Buttermilk Falls is to park at the pull-off on Indian Trail Drive. From there, follow the Orange Trail for about a quarter mile until you reach a large and obvious wildflower circle with the trail circling it (similar to a traffic circle). Turn left at this circle and walk a few hundred feet until you reach Buttermilk Falls.
Buttermilk Falls is a very seasonal waterfall. It has a very small drainage area, and the basalt bedrock causes most rainwater to drain quickly. Unfortunately, the waterfall is located next to some houses and at the end of a road (that forbids parking), so it is not exactly the most beautiful location. A similar, larger waterfall, Three Block Falls, can also be found in High Mountain.
As a testament to its seasonality, the pictures below were taken on April 12, 2026, when most waterfalls look their best. I have been to Buttermilk Falls a handful of times, but have never seen it more than a trickle.
