Description
Wanaque River Falls is a small roadside waterfall along the Wanaque River in West Milford. The waterfall flows into a narrow chute along the river, creating a small but powerful waterfall.
The waterfall is located on a major river, so while other waterfalls nearby may dry up, Wanaque River Falls flows consistently, with the highest flow during the spring.
The waterfall is upstream of Mine Hole Falls, a larger, but off-limits waterfall.
Parking
Parking is available at a pull-off on East Shore Road in West Milford. Multiple pull-offs line this road; the closest is at 41.163361, -74.316722. It is also directly across the road from a yellow footbridge over the Wanaque River, the only bridge across the river on the road. The pull-off can hold about 5 cars and usually has parking.
Directions
There are two main ways to reach the falls: either along the road or by crossing the river via the bridge and working your way downriver. I highly recommend viewing it from East Shore Drive. This is because access from the other side of the river is along a narrow, overgrown ledge about 20 feet above the river. The view is also limited now because a tree fell just below the falls.
Reaching the waterfall from the parking area is simple: just walk 400 feet downriver along the road to where you will see a clearing on the other side of the guardrail. Hop over the guardrail where you can see the waterfall.
