Description
Unnamed Waterfall on Clinton Brook 1 is a small waterfall located below Clinton Falls and above an additional, but much larger unnamed waterfall.
Reaching the falls and getting a clear view takes some effort. The area is filled with numerous unmarked, unmaintained trails, a few of which have been affected by minor landslides and feature slippery slopes and blowdowns. Additionally, once you make it down to Clinton Brook, a large, poorly placed rock obstructs the view. You also can’t get to the other side of Clinton Brook without getting your feet wet to see the waterfall without the rock in front.
One of the most distinctive features of Clinton Brook’s waterfalls, is the reddish rock around them. Water flowing over the rock oxidizes the iron in the sandstone bedrock, creating the vibrant color.
It is possible to see the waterfall from a distance while looking at the lower unnamed waterfall, where you can see this waterfall above it.
Directions and Parking
Despite its proximity to the road, access is challenging. Because the waterfall is in the Pequannock Watershed, hikers must obtain a permit. Parking is limited to designated spaces labeled on the trail map. Despite the numerous pull-offs along Clinton Road, there is no official parking near the falls. I found it easiest to park in the P1 parking area and bushwhack roughly 0.25-0.5 miles toward the falls. Fortunately, an unofficial purple trail has been spray-painted to help guide the way. I strongly recommend avoiding Clinton Road itself, as it is fast-moving and local police may give you a hard time because of the road’s haunted reputation. The immediate area around Clinton Falls features a clear ATV path.
