Description
The Pequannock River Falls is a small waterfall on the river of the same name, located along the border between Passaic and Morris counties. The waterfall is man-made, and the southern side of the river features the remains of a water raceway. The waterfall itself is the remains of a dam which allowed the raceway to fill with water. Today, the far-left side of the dam was “breached.” As a result, in normal conditions, water flows down the side. During high water, the river overtops the rest of the “dam,” creating a scenic waterfall.
Directions
The waterfall straddles public and private property. The main view is from Waterfall Village, a private apartment complex. An observation platform can be found here, and no signs prevent non-residents from visiting, though it’s clear the property is for private use.
Alternatively, you can visit through the Butler Forest Preserve. To reach it this way, park at the end of Jericho Road in Butler. From here walk straight into the woods and down the hillside to where you will see the falls. There is no trail here.
