Green Brook Falls at Watchung Reservation

Description

Green Brook Falls is a small waterfall located at Watchung Reservation. The waterfall lies along the White Sierra Trail and is best accessed from Seeley’s Pond, which features a stone dam that should not be confused with the waterfall itself. The waterfall is fairly small, at just over 5 feet in height.

Green Brook Falls is clearly a party spot and features excessive litter, the most I’ve seen in any park in New Jersey. While the waterfall itself is nice, the surrounding area is disgusting.

This waterfall should not be confused with the similarly named Greenbrook Falls in Alpine. Some people also call this waterfall Blue Brook Falls. Blue Brook is actually a tributary that flows into Green Brook at Seeley’s Pond upstream. An additional small (approximately 2-foot) cascade forms right where Blue Brook flows into Green Brook.

Directions

Access to Green Brook Falls is easy if you remain on the marked trails. Outside the marked trails, a maze of footpaths varies in clarity and ease of navigation. While slightly longer, I recommend sticking to the marked path.

  1. From the Seely’s Pond Picnic Area, walk across the field and locate an unmarked trail. Follow this trail until you reach Sky Top Drive.
  2. Turn right onto Sky Top Drive, crossing over Blue Brook.
  3. Turn right after the bridge onto the White Sierra Trail. There are a few trails here. Look for the White Trail. All other trails are unmarked. While they will eventually take you to the falls, the White Trail is the easiest to navigate. Note: you can also park here for a slightly shorter hike, but parking is limited to about 6 cars.
  4. Follow the trail for a half mile until you reach Green Brook Falls. You’ll pass many intersections along the way; stay on the White Trail the entire time.
