Black River Falls

A long exposure image of Black River Falls at the Kay Center

Description

Black River Falls is a little-known waterfall in Black River County Park along the namesake river. A short, but moderately hilly hike from the Kay Environmental Center takes visitors to this waterfall. Due to the large drainage area on the Black River, Black River Falls looks good throughout the year, even when other nearby waterfalls have dried to a trickle.

At 16 feet, it is far from the tallest in the state, but it holds its own thanks to its impressive volume.

While the waterfall is visible from the trail, it is possible to get closer if desired for a clearer view, as the trail is a distance above the river. There is no official trail to the waterfall, but it is possible to scramble to the river for a clearer view, though this is steep.

Directions

The trail to Black River Falls is easy but follows a zigzag route, switching between multiple trails. While it may seem complicated, this is actually the fastest way to the waterfall.

  1. From the Elizabeth D. Kay Environmental Center parking area, take the Blue/Patriots Path Trail, walking past a sign pointing left towards a butterfly garden.
  2. Take the trail 0.2 miles until you reach a fork with the Yellow Trail. Turn left onto the Yellow Trail.
  3. Take the Yellow Trail for 0.2 miles until you reach the Orange Trail on the right. Turn right onto the Orange Trail.
  4. Take the Orange Trail 0.3 miles until you reach a cross intersection with the Green Trail. Turn left onto the Green Trail.
  5. Take the Green Trail 0.2 miles until you reach the waterfall on the right.
