White Lake Natural Resource Area is a small but excellent park in Warren County’s Hardwick Township, centered around the lake of the same name. The park is best known for its crystal-clear lake, which is a popular location for car-top boaters. Surrounding the lake is a network of well-marked and enjoyable trails that wind through scenic meadows and past historic ruins from the area’s industrial past.

Trails

White Lake features 8 marked trails totaling about 6 miles. All the trails are moderately easy, featuring modest hills. None of the trails are loops, requiring hikers to take multiple trails to hike around the lake. Despite requiring multiple trails, this is easy to follow and highly recommended.

Boating

Cartop boats, including kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards, are welcome on the lake. A small boat launch provides easy access to this 69-acre body of water. Because of its compact size, it’s ideal for a scenic paddle rather than an extended excursion. The white lakebed creates one of the most unique paddling experiences in the state, giving the water an almost tropical blue appearance.

As of 2026, free kayak rentals are available on Tuesday evenings.

Parking

White Lake features a handful of parking areas. Despite this, visitors looking to recreate on the lake may have to park in an overflow lot. Fortunately, there’s a boat drop-off area to prevent people from having to walk too far carrying their boat.

Crowds

While the whole park is popular, crowds are primarily centered on White Lake itself. This can make it difficult to find parking in the main lot and delay staging boats in the unloading area. On the lake, it can feel congested as well, as the lake is only 69 acres. While 69 acres may sound like a lot, on a busy day, that can feel really small.

The crowds on the hiking trail are much more manageable, and hikers have the benefit of alternate parking areas away from the lake.

Maintenance

The park is very well kept. The trails are all cleared and mowed through the multiple meadows. Even the entrance to the park is well landscaped.

Who is this park for?

White Lake offers something for almost everyone, thanks to its easy access and gorgeous scenery. The only visitors who might want to plan differently are those seeking long, full-day adventures, as both the lake and trail networks are relatively small. Even if you aren’t planning to hike or paddle, you can still appreciate the park’s beauty from the picnic area right by the boat launch.

Final Thoughts

If it is not clear yet, you should visit White Lake: both the hiking and water activities are worth it alone, and due to the smaller size you can easily do a hike and paddle on the same day.
