Description
Chikahoki Falls is an impressive waterfall in Norvin Green State Forest. The falls feature two side-by-side fantail cascades before dropping into a large pool, creating an impressive visual scene. The trail itself passes around the side, but for the best view, hikers will want to cross Posts Brook for a head-on view. Fortunately, this is easy thanks to user-placed stepping stones.
Directions
There are multiple ways to reach Chikahoki Falls; the two most common routes are described below.
- From the Otter Hole Parking Area
- Take the Blue Hewitt Butler Trail from the parking area on Otter Hole Road. Make sure you take the trail on the same side of the road as the parking area, as the Blue Trail can be hiked on either side of the road.
- Cross over Otter Hole Falls.
- After crossing Otter Hole Falls, stay to the right to remain on the Blue Trail.
- Continue for nearly a mile until you reach the White Posts Brook Trail. Turn right onto this trail.
- Follow the White Trail a few hundred feet until you reach Chikahoki Falls on the right.
- From the Wyanokie Crest Pull-Off
- Take the Yellow Wyanokie Crest Trail from the small pull-off on Glenwild Avenue.
- Follow the Yellow Trail for 0.6 miles until you reach the Blue Hewitt Butler Trail.
- Turn right onto the Blue Trail and follow it for 0.3 miles until you reach the White Posts Brook Trail.
- Turn right onto the White Trail and follow it a few hundred feet until you reach Chikahoki Falls on the right.
Parking
Parking at Chikahoki Falls is limited and can be challenging. There are three parking areas providing easy access to the falls: two at Otter Hole and a small pull-off parking area.
Most people park at Otter Hole, which features two parking areas. This is recommended, as it is slightly larger and has direct access to the Otter Hole Falls, another great waterfall in the park. Otter Hole features two small lots, each holding about 10 cars. The two parking areas are located at 582 Glenwild Ave, Bloomingdale, NJ 07403.
Another option is the pull-off at the start of the Wyanokie Crest Trail. This lot holds about 4 cars and is located just uphill from Lake Kampfe on Glenwild Avenue.
If possible, try to visit on a weekday or before 9:00 a.m. on weekends to avoid parking issues. Do not park on the shoulder of Glenwild Avenue, as the police regularly ticket vehicles here.
