Devil’s Hole Falls

Devils Hole Falls

Description

Devil’s Hole Falls is a small chute waterfall along the Peckman River in Cedar Grove. Located along the Peckman River, Devil’s Hole Falls drops 9.8 feet through a small but tight gorge into a deep pool of water. Devil’s Hole Falls itself is visually appealing, cascading through basalt with an old train trestle located in the background. Despite the visual appeal, the area immediately surrounding the waterfall is disgusting, and the river has a slight odor, possibly from sewage runoff. This really detracts from what could be a good, local waterfall.

Directions

Reaching Devil’s Hole Falls is incredibly easy and only requires a short hike from the Cedar Grove Community Park. While there are no signs directing you to the falls, a series of unofficial trails lead you to the waterfall.

  • From the parking area at 99 Slattery Dr, Cedar Grove, NJ 07009, walk along the paved path towards the playgrounds (away from the pool).
  • Follow this trail which will soon turn to dirt and cross a small wooden bridge.
  • Immediately after crossing this bridge, turn right onto an unmarked trail.
  • Follow this trail down to the Peckman River, where it will turn left.
  • Continue along this trail until you reach the waterfall.

Swimming

There are multiple signs forbidding swimming due to a series of accidents in the park, most recently in 2023. Even if you are a confident swimmer, I would heed this warning, as the water is not clean. The police do patrol the area for swimmers.
