Review

Silas Condict Park is a hidden gem, offering activities for everyone. Despite its massive parking lots and quality of amenities, the park is surprisingly quiet and uncrowded.

The White Trail is the standout feature, with excellent views and an enjoyable hike that feels longer than it actually is (in a good way). For non-hikers, the picnic areas are well maintained, and Cantry’s Lake is especially scenic, and often has people fishing.

Park History

Silas Condict County Park is named for Silas Condict, a Morris County politician from the late 1700s.

The Morris County Park Commission acquired the property in 1963.

The property line of the park is actually significantly larger than what most visitors realize. Most of the land surrounding the Smoke Rise gated community is actually part of Silas Condict. Unfortunately, that land is all undeveloped.

The Casino

The Casino is a former speakeasy that opened in 1933 and closed in 1938. Entrance to the casino is currently only for private rentals, but visitors are still able to walk around the historic structure.

Trails

A variety of hiking trails are featured at the park, with the highlight being the White Trail, which passes through a “cave tunnel.” The cave tunnel is a glacial erratic where a large boulder was placed on top of other boulders by glaciers, creating a natural tunnel.
