Pyramid Mountain is a large county park in the Morris County towns of Montville, Boonton, and Kinnelon. The park is notable for its glacial erratics, or rocks that were moved by glaciers thousands of years ago. The most well-known of which is Tripod Rock, a 280,000-pound boulder balancing on three smaller rocks. Aside from glacial erratics, the park is home to miles of hiking trails to a handful of overlooks and a small waterfall. All trails in the park are pleasant and range from a light stroll to more challenging. Pyramid Mountain is a perfect hiking destination for anyone.

Points of Interest
Pyramid Mountain
Pyramid Mountain is the main area of the park and by far the most popular. Atop Pyramid Mountain itself is the notable Tripod Rock, a boulder seemingly impossibly balancing upon three significantly smaller rocks. Other notable rocks in the area include Bear Rock and Whale’s Head Rock.
The trails in this area are rocky, and any route to the summit of Pyramid Mountain (as is required to see Tripod Rock) is moderately steep, but is not too long. Other enjoyable routes include the Orange Trail which passes along the Taylortown Reservoir.
Here you will also find the visitor center. The visitor center features a few exhibits as well as hike guides.
Turkey Mountain
Across the street from the main Pyramid Mountain parking area and visitor center is the less popular Turkey Mountain. While Pyramid Mountain has just one notable incline (up Pyramid Mountain itself), Turkey Mountain features more rolling hills. The trails here are generally smoother, but feature more ups and downs.
Notable points include Valhalla Falls, an overlook of Valhalla Lake, and the 100 steps, a long set of stone steps under a set of power lines.
Turkey Mountain is perfect for those who want a slightly less busy hike than the trails in the main Pyramid Mountain area.
Kincaid Woods
Kincaid Woods is by far the least trafficked area of Pyramid Mountain. The trails here are interesting enough as they wind around old mine test pits, but the trails in the main park area and Turkey Mountain are better. Kincaid Woods is perfect for those wanting solitude as not many people hike in this section.
The trails in Kincaid Woods connect to Pyramid Mountain near Bear Rock and Tripod Rock for those wanting to see the famous rock formations on less less-trafficked trail.
